I spent much of my teen years at Mrs. Pead’s house in the 70’s. It was always the social center for weekend activities- the go to place. We were always welcomed and she would always stretch whatever supper she had planned like the loaves and fishes Bible story to accommodate whoever Cathie brought home unannounced. Though I was a close friend of Cathie, it was her mum who in many ways drew us in. She was an active listener, not judgmental and offered sound advice for all of our teen angst. She was never too busy or too tired to hear our life dramas. Over the years, I kept in touch with her and she remained one of the kindest women I knew. She was the cornerstone of her family. She ran a variety store for years and worked incredibly long hours to support her family. This was uncommon at the time and in many ways, she served as the role model to all of us who went on to balance career and family. She was the first working mom I knew. I appreciated her. Indeed, her passing ends an era.

My earliest memory of Auntie Cathie goes back to 1946/7. I can remember when she and Great Aunt Barbara would take us to Kelvingrove Park in Glasgow, sometimes to feed the ducks, sometimes to listen to the bands, or to roll our hard-boiled eggs at Easter. I remember her taking me on the Govan ferry for my first-ever visit to my Great Granny. I remember visiting the factory where she worked making hats. I remember being the pageboy at her wedding to Uncle Jim. Such childhood memories of long ago. Now she has gone to meet up again with Uncle Jim, granny and grandad and her brother Hugh.

I was young when Cathie and her family became my second family -- and now I am, myself an elder. So a lifetime of memories are flooding through me since I learned that Mrs. Pead passed peacefully from this life to the next, eternal life with Cathie holding her hand. She will always be Mrs. Pead to me although she told me so many times to call her Catherine.

Happy times, sad times, celebrations -- weddings, baptisms, meals around her table. It is hard to imagine a time I didn't know her.

But one memory stands out, shining with life and vibrancy. We were sitting in the kitchen of Becky and Terry's home in Montreal, the night before Heloise and Sophia were to be baptised. In all the years I had known her I had never heard her speak of her feeling and emotions. But this night was different. She spoke of her husband Jim and his death. And how her family and the Church had saved her life after his death. The support of Cathie and her family and the life giving church community -- mass, receiving the sacraments and finding a place of belonging.

I have never forgotten the power of that evening and how honored I was to have her share such personal feelings with me.

She has several times thanked me for being a good friend to her Catherine -- but truly nothing could be easier. I am thankful to Mrs. Pead for having Cathie as a daughter and for sharing her with me all these years. And thankful to Cathie for always making me feel part of her family. It has been a true blessing and I am grateful.

Always Mrs Pead or Cathy's Mom to me, I have fond memories of her going back to university days. She knitted incredible sweaters for all our generation's children and their children. A wonderful Granny to all of them. My condolences to Cathy jr, Becky and Sean and their spouses and children. And to all the others who called her Mom or Granny. Hugs to all of you.

She was the only auntie I had and was my godmother.So sad to think I will never see her again on my visits to Canada but her memory will live on.She was always kind and generous to me and I will never forget her.Sleep tight ,don't let the bugs bite Auntie Cathie.
